HENDERSKELFE WALLED GARDEN SE 7169 Castle Howard 12/83 Walls to walled garden with gates including the Satyr Gate and corner piers GV I Walls to walled garden with gates including the Satyr Gate, and corner piers. Early C18 by Sir John Vanbrugh, extended to west 1744-1773. Satyr Gate 1705, with carving by Sam Carpenter. Brick walls to north, east and south, hammer-dressed limestone to west. Stone gate piers and wrought-iron gates. Walls approximately 250 metres by 150 metres, with corner piers, and major gateways at mid points of noth, west and south walls. Satyr Gate in north wall approximately 20 metres from north-east corner. Walls: approximately 4 metres in height with coping stones. Satyr Gate: rusticated round-arched gateway with carved satyrs to exterior and lions' masks to interior beneath ramped keyed cornice, surmounted by carved flower baskets. Scrollwork to gate and overthrow. West gate: piers approximately 6 metres in height, with chisel-tooled banded rustication. Moulded cornice surmounted by octagonal finials on stepped bases. Elaborate overthrow to wrought-iron gates dated 1894. North and south gates: piers approximately 5 metres in height. Pulvinated rustication to columns with acanthus frieze and moulded cornices, surmounted by bead-rimmed urns with foliate scrolls around base. North gate: plain standards, dog bars and foliate overthrow. Lead faun's head as water spout to internal face of minor entrance to north wall. Corner piers: cruciform on plan. Approximately 5 metres in height. Rusticated columns with moulded cornices, pyramidal caps and pineapple finials. Howard G, Castle Howard Guidebook, 1972.
