Details
OVERBURY CP - SO 9437 - 9537 9/113 Nindfield - II
House. C17 origins, refronted mid-C18, altered and extended 1913. Roughcast brick (?) and plain tiled roof concealed behind tall parapets with ashlar coping and brick ridge end stacks. Three storeys. Three bays; outer bays have canted bay window additions which reach to full height of facade and have 12-pane sash windows throughout. The central bay has a very tall round- headed stair window that lights both floors and incorporates two 12-pane sashes the upper one having a traceried head. Central entrance has a moulded flat canopy on corbels with roundel relief moulds and a half-glazed door. To rear right is the original Cl7 range of limestone rubble; single storey and attic with half-dormers. Windows are all c1913 insertions and have leaded casements. Also L-shaped 1913 addition to rear centre and left; dressed limestone rubble with hipped plain tiled roofs, two storeys with leaded casements. Interior has altered central open well staircase which retains some C18 turned balusters in its lower flight. (Newton, W G: The Life and Works of Ernest Newton, London, 1925).
