South gates, overthrow gate piers and steps to Church of St. Andrew

Gates, overthrow, gate piers and steps. Early - mid C19 piers; gates and
overthrow possibly mid or late C19. Rusticated ashlar piers, wrought-iron
gates, gritstone steps. Gate piers approximately 3 metres high, each
comprised of chamfered base, rusticated piers with fluted entablature,
deep moulded cornice and ball finial on stepped base. Gates: bars and dog
bars, ornamented with C and S scrolls as overthrow. 2 flights of 8 and 10
steps, segmental on plan with nosing to the treads. The gateway is
illustrated in Whitaker, where the gates and overthrow are shown as being
very plain, like the west gates (q.v.) T.D. Whitaker, History and
Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven, 3rd Edition, 1878, p210.
