13/9 Piggeries at Towers Farm Arnewood 150m north-west of Arnewood Court
GV II
Model pig farm. Circa 1880 for ATT Peterson. Mass concrete built in lifts, including vaulted roofs which must have been built in-situ on formwork. Situated behind Downlands Cottage, off Barrows Lane, a planned farm complex consisting of 3 rows of buildings set parallel on a north-west/south-east axis. Buildings of different length but same form: single storey, 2 bays wide with moulded cornice that runs along sides and at ends rises up along vault of roof. Various openings for windows and doors and some chimneys (probably rendered brick). Derelict and in a poor state of repair, one range suffered a sudden collapse in the early 1980s. These buildings are important both as an example of early concrete construction, and as an example of the late C19 planned pig farm.
