Details
ASHTON UNDER HILL CP off COTTONS LANE (south side) SO 9838 - 9938 7/17 22/16 Orchard Cottage 30-7-59 - II
House. Dated 1642, with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Part timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill on coursed limestone rubble base, part limestone rubble, with slate roofs: L-plan; main range of two framed bays aligned north/south and on the north side is a large external ashlar chimney with tiled offsets and a pair of square stacks with a frieze and the date "1642" inscribed beneath the moulded cappings. At the north end is an intersecting cross-wing of three framed bays which has a large chimney between its central and west bays with a tall brick ridge stack. Part two storeys and attic, part single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate; cross-wing has a truncated collar and tie-beam truss with four struts at its west end and a collar and tie-beam truss with two collars and three struts to the lower collar at its east end. West front elevation: windows are C20 leaded casements. Main part has two square stair lights; gable end of cross-wing to left has three ground floor 2-light windows and an attic light. In the angle with the main part is a 3-light window with a plank weather- ing, a 2-light window, a single-light window and a raking-top dormer with a square window. Attic light at south end of main part. Main entrance on north side of cross-wing and has a lean-to C20 brick porch and C20 door. There is a C17 or earlier door to the rear of the main range said to have come from the church. Interior not inspected.
