II
Methodist church and adjoining meeting room. 1928, with late C20 alterations. By Sir Alfred Gelder. Brick with concrete and ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs, with octagonal slate dome to main block, topped with an octagonal turret with volutes. Edwardian Baroque detailing. Plinth, string course, eaves band, coped parapets. 2 storeys; octagonal main block with square pavilions at the corners. Front elevation, to Cottingham Road, has a recessed pedimented centre with angle pilasters, flanked by square pavilions. Central round-headed traceried window with moulded surround, bracketed sill and elongated double keystone. The window has a supplementary segmental pediment on brackets. On either side, a transomed 2-light window with moulded surround. Below, between the pavilions, a projecting rusticated flat-roofed porch with corbels above the central recessed doorway. Glazed double doors with margin glazed overlight. On either side, a similar smaller doorway with a panel above it, and margin glazed double doors. The side pavilions have a transomed 2-light margin glazed window with moulded surround and apron, and a similar window to each return. Left return, to Newland Avenue, has a central first floor elevation similar to Cottingham Road front and below, three 2-light transomed windows with moulded surrounds. Pavilion to left has a transomed margin glazed 2-light window and below it, a moulded doorcase with cornice and a pair of half-glazed doors with glazing bars. Left return has a 2-light margin glazed window with apron. Rear has a half-hipped 2-storey projection with 2 paired sashes on each floor. Adjoining meeting room, 2 storeys, has canted corner. Above, two 12-pane sashes and below, 3 similar sashes. INTERIOR: square central space with canted corners each with a pedimented concrete doorcase and a pair of half-glazed doors, under a shallow steel-framed dome with panelled ribs and band, and a central boss surrounded by a ring of lights. On 3 sides, a serpentine bow-fronted cantilevered gallery with egg-and-dart band and wreaths. 2 columns at rear. At the corners, single doors with pedimented wooden cases. Under the gallery, 3 double doors with pedimented concrete doorcases. On either side, late C20 partitions forming side rooms. At front, a panelled segmental arch and a stage and dais with fretted wooden screens and round-arched wooden rail. Fittings include linked wooden chairs with plywood seats.
