Also Known As: CAWOODS FISH CURERS, ESSEX STREET

Also known as: Cawoods Fish Curers ESSEX STREET.
Fish smoking houses and processing sheds, now disused. c1890, with minor C20 alterations. Brick with slate and corrrugated asbestos roofs. Tall windowless northern smoke house has a narrow longitudinal flue surrounded by a
catwalk and guard rail, carrying 10 metal cowls with hoods and shaped vanes. Southern smoke house had 10 similar cowls, though only 7 survive intact, one has collapsed, all mounted directly on the ridge and surrounded by catwalk and guard rail. Between the smoke houses, a series of processing sheds and offices with north-light roofs. INTERIOR of the smoke houses retain their original kilns with fittings and original doors.
These smoke houses are a type of characteristic special purpose building associated with the Hull fishing industry, which flourished c1880-1970.
