ST3308 CHURCH STREET 756-1/4/17 (West side) 29/07/76 Group of 6 chest tombs immediately to south of south aisle of Parish Church (Formerly Listed as: CHURCH STREET (West side) Tomb chests and War Memorial in the Parish Church churchyard)
GV II
6 chest tombs. Limestone. That to the left (west) is late C17 with flat top with chamfered and rounded edge. Sides have 2 semi-circular arches with keystone and imposts with circular florets in central spandrels. Inscription on all panels. That to the south commemorates John Wilby d.1676: the north facing panel has inscription and date, possibly 1716. Central tombs early C18. Shallow hipped top with moulded edge and plinth. Ends have convex panels reflected in the shape of the top. Right tomb, to east, is late C17. On east facing panel are 2 shields, that to left has 2 circles, to the right, horizontal stripes. Inscriptions on all other sides, Gothic to the left, Roman to the rear. Pair of chest tombs, one 4m from centre of south wall of south aisle. Late C17. Flat top with chamfered edge and plinth and moulded panels. The other approx 4m to east and 4m from SE corner of church is C18 with hipped top with moulded edges and plinth. Raised-and-fielded panels to sides.
