Two houses, now offices. c1770-1800. Flemish-bond brick, stone coping to parapet, cornice, stepped voussoirs, cills, cill band to first floor and door cases, C20 pantile hipped mansard roof with dormers and brick stacks to right of each house and to rear gable end of rear wing. Double-depth plan with long early C19 single-storey wing to rear right (of No.17), making L-plan. 3 storeys with attics and basements; each house is 3-window range. Originally 6/6-pane sash windows, (6/9 to first floor), many of lower sashes now have some plate glass. The right return of No.16 to right has unfinished brickwork to quoins implying that row is incomplete. Double doors to left each have 3 raised-and-fielded panels below a reeded lintel and ornamental fanlight. Doorcase has reeded pilasters, imposts, archivolt and keystone. The rear has a 3/6-pane sash window to dormer and flat gauged brick arches to windows corresponding to those on the front. No.17 to the left is similar to the King Square facade, though entrance is in left return. This has flat gauged brick arches to blind windows on all floors to right, and flanking sash windows similar to those at the front above the left-of-centre double 3-panel doors; these set forward in a shallow Tuscan-style porch. To left of door is an early/mid C19 8/8-pane sash window. 3 similar sashes to one-storey rear wing; the door of rear wing is to right of centre, it has an overlight and a flight of steps from left to reach the higher pavement level of King Square. The rear of the main block has a dormer similar to that of No.16 and 8/8-pane sash windows to the main block. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Spearhead railings with urn finials front both basement areas and sweep up to flank the door of No.16, which has a C19 bootscraper to right. Part of a fine late Georgian square built on the site of Bridgwater Castle.
