II

House. c1600 and C18, extended in C19 and C20. Timber-framed, with C18 cladding of red and blue bricks in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main range of 3 bays facing SSE, with original stack to left of right bay, behind axis, forming a lobby-entrance, and C20 axial internal stack at left end. C18 parallel range to rear of right half, and C19 single-storey lean-to extension to rear of remainder. Cross-wing to left, extending forwards, and single-storey section to rear of it, 1970. One storey with attics. Three C20 sashes in early C19 style, and 3 more in gabled dormers. C20 door, an accurate replica of the early C19 door it replaced, in early C19 wooden doorcase with reeded pilasters and unusual pattern of reeding above. C18 moulded wooden eaves cornice at front. There is a straight joint between the first brick facade, and the cladding at the right side which overlaps it, but is continuous with the construction of the parallel range; otherwise similar in style, both C18. INTERIOR: the 2 right bays have chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of vertical section jointed to them with soffit tenons with diminished haunches. In the middle bay the beam has been severed for an inserted stair. Some joists have been replaced in machine-sawn hardwood since 1979. Wide wood-burning hearth facing to right substantially rebuilt since 1979, with renewed mantel beam. Similar hearth facing to left retains original mantel, beam, re-bricked at sides. The left bay has a chamfered transverse beam with runout stops, and C20 moulding and joists. Between the left and middle bays an original storey post is rebated for a door. Face-halved and bladed scarf in rear wallplate. The original trusses are of arch-braced collar construction, without tie-beams. 2 thin tie-beams have been lap-dovetailed to the principal rafters at a later date, both severed for inserted doorways. Clasped purlins with straight wind-braces. An early C19 fire surround with reeded jambs and reeded pattern above, identical in style with the doorcase, is loose in an ancillary building, and may be re-fitted at the left fireplace, which is a C20 reconstruction of an earlier hearth and stack. Restoration and renovation since 1979 executed by K Tredgett of Brentwood.
