House. C16, C17, C20. Timber-framed, rendered, brick rendered, peg-tile roof. Plan: principal range with S cross-wing extending from back to front and N. Cross-wing projecting to W, C19 and C20 lean-to additions at back. EXTERIOR: W front elevation - 2 storeyed, all walls rough rendered and all windows and doors C20 replacements except for S cross-wing of brick, showing early C17 ovolo mouldings round the windows beneath the rendering. S cross-wing has canted bay windows on both floors beneath a projecting front end gable and the window apertures between the mullions have C20 casement glazing. The N elevation of the wing has a simple 3-light ovolo mullioned window on the first floor similarly glazed. Between the ground floor and first floor of the S cross-wing a deep cornice extends round the block, now simply of triangular section (moulding may remain beneath rendering). Central stack c1800. N cross-wing has an external stack on the N side, twin octagonal shafts, c1600, rebuilt but using old bricks also C20 door with a simple porch. N cross-wing gabled front has C20 5-light metal casement windows on both floors. S elevation of the wing - C20 wooden French doors, 2x4 panes. Central range - ground floor C20 French doors and C20 wooden casement window windows. 2 stacks of c1800 are seen behind the roof apex. Rear of house all C20 reconstruction except one C19 casement window with glazing bars, 2x4 panes in lean-to to round S cross-wing. INTERIOR mainly C20 now but S cross-wing ground floor room has exposed ceiling bridging joist with lamb's tongue chamfer stops which also occur on the central fireplace lintel. Ceiling above on first floor has deep section joists with diminished haunched tenons. House main central range continuing on to N cross-wing has a tension braced wall and a jowled post, implying a C16 date for the core. There is panelling of c1600, used alone as a divider and a rustic Jacobean plaster overmantel of 'Doric' type on the first floor of the N cross-wing. The house probably has a C16 core comprising a straight range. Early in the C17 the fashionable S brick cross-wing was added and a timber-framed front cross-wing was also built on at the N end and was provided with a pair of fireplaces of which the upper one remains.
