INGATESTONE AND FRYERNING TQ69NE HALL LANE, Ingatestone 723-1/7/363 (East side) Barn 110 metres north-west of - Ingatestone Hall GV II Barn. Late C16. Timber-framed, weatherboarded, roofed with 'handmade red clay tiles. 6 bays aligned approximately E-W aisled to the N only, with a later midstrey in the third bay of the aisle from the Wend. C19 greatedoors to N, ledged and saltire-braced inside, and one fixed light to E of midstrey. Aperture for double doors to S blocked with light studding and weatherboarding and one fixed light; 2 more fixed lights to W of it. Early C19 casement of 4+4 lights in W gable, partly covered by C20 barn to W. Red brick plinth one metre high at SW corner, less elsewhere owing to gradient of site. All the weatherboarding is treated with gas tar. Gablet hip at E end. INTERIOR: jowled arcade posts, aisle posts and S wallposts. Heavy studding, tenoned and pegged. Bracing of various periods and types. At the E end, curved braces trenched inside studs. In the E bay of the S wall, are curved braces trenched outside the studs; no original bracing below the girts. Elsewhere, heavy primary straight bracing. 3 edge-halved and bridled scarfs in arcade plate; straight arcade braces; face-halved and bladed scarfs in aisle plate. S wallplate much repaired. High clasped purlins with 2 vertical queen struts to each collar, and curved wind braces. In the 2 W bays heavy rafters of vertical section, not in the original rafter seatings. The remainder of the roof has been rebuilt at a later date with thinner rafters. C19/2Q inserted floor in 2 W bays, and a partition between this and the remainder, of Flettons on the ground floor, weatherboards above. An additional plate has been bolted above the arcade plate in these bays. Straight braces to straight tie-beams, tenoned and pegged, and additional C19 bolted grown knees sawn with a circular saw. High quality oak timber throughout, well maintained at all periods.
