GV II

Public house. Early C16, C19, C20. Timber-framing, partially weatherboarded, brick, peg-tile roof. L-shaped plan, principal range with E cross-wing. EXTERIOR: principal range, with central stack, ground floor brick, 3 segment headed windows with lower plain panes and upper lights with glazing bars, 4x2 panes. Segment headed doorway at junction with cross-wing, door has upper glazing with glazing bars, 3x3 panes and lower panes. First floor, 2 windows rising through eaves with facade gables with barge boards. E cross-wing has ground and first floor C20 double casement with glazing bars, ground floor 6x4 panes, first floor 6x5 panes. E elevation (partially inspected) has 2 external stacks to cross-wing, probably rebuilds of early ones. There are additions to the rear of the cross-wing,(not inspected). INTERIOR: the E cross-wing was a high end cross-wing of a medieval hall house. Ground floor inspection shows evidence of original jetty to front, storey posts and binding joist of 2 bayed frame with removed arched braces. Stud, arched brace on original hall face with sooting of surrounding also, door frame to rear of cross-wing, leading off the hall. Principal tie-beam above central cross-wing truss seen from road, through upper window. Inspection of upper floor not permitted but timber-framing (of the hall) is said to continue into the main range to about half way at first floor level though nothing is apparent on the ground floor. W end rebuilt and not of special interest. The Greyhound and the outbuildings (qv) form a group.
