SD40NW ASMALL LANE 663-1/4/126 (North side) 10/12/92 Barn approx. 6m E of White Rails Farmhouse

Barn. c.1700, altered. Mostly handmade red brick in English garden wall bond (3+1), but the south side (to the road) partly rebuilt in C20 brick; corrugated roof. Rectangular 5-bay plan. The south front has a blocked waggon doorway in the centre, flanked by large C19 buttresses, the top of that to the right partly covering the remains of a feature with a basket-arched surround (a former window or a plaque, perhaps); the wall to the right has blocked slit-breathers; that to the left has been rebuilt. The north front has a rebuilt waggon entrance in the centre (with metal sliding doors), a square window and altered doorway to the left, and a cart doorway to the right with cambered timber lintel. The west gable wall has a flight of external steps to a loft doorway which is square headed and flanked by small basket-arched windows. INTERIOR: windbraced principal-rafter roof with raked struts, 2 pairs of purlins; timber-framed partition wall with wattle-and-daub infilling. Forms group with White Rails Farmhouse (q.v.).
