GV II

Town house, later bank, now building society premises. c1840. Granite ashlar with vermiculated plinth, moulded window architraves and tall parapet entablature with heavy moulded cornice; asbestos slate roof where visible; brick stacks. Tapered corner-site plan. Classical style. 2-storeys over basement; symmetrical 3-bay front framed by giant pilasters. Late C19 or C20 twelve-pane horned sashes; central doorway flanked by blind panels; original pair of 5-panel doors and latticed overlight, 4 granite steps; latticed basement window on left. Left-hand return and rear elevation have original sashes with glazing bars; some blind windows. INTERIOR: open-well open-string staircase with scrolled mahogany handrail; panelled doors and moulded plaster ceiling cornice. This building is part of an important group of high quality buildings including the guildhall (qv) and market hall (now the Museum (qv)) in the centre of the town.
