Large farmhouse. C18, on site of Doomsday manor, front range rebuilt mid C19 on site of earlier house. Granite ashlar front with plinth, mid-floor band rusticated quoins and shallow segmental arches with projecting keyblocks, otherwise rubble with granite dressings including rusticated quoins to rear of main block; Grouted slate roof with very deep eaves on widely-spaced paired brackets to front range; grouted and slurried scantle slate roof to rear wing; 2 very large rubble lateral stacks with granite entablature over rear wall of front range and similar axial stack left of centre, also a brick stack to rear gable of wing. Large L-shaped plan with double-depth front range and C18 rear wing at right-angles on left. 2 storeys; symmetrical 5-window front. Mid/late C19 twelve-pane horned sashes; central doorway with V-jointed door of similar date and overlight. Rear has small windows except for wide tripartite stair window and wide doorway on the left with V-jointed door. Rear wing has 6-window range facing away from rear courtyard. Mostly early or mid C19 sashes with glazing bars except for 2 horned copies to 1st-floor left, a later 3-light casement on the left and a wide 3-light casement towards right; central doorway with possible C18 door with wide planks. Rear (courtyard front) of 1:2:1-bays has early C19 20-pane sash to 1st-floor left, otherwise early C19 horizontal-sliding sashes with glazing bars. Central bays are a lean-to stair and pantry projection. INTERIOR: rear wing only inspected: 2 large fireplaces, the rear fireplace partly rebuilt mid C19 and fitted with a cloam oven, the other fireplace rebuilt or built C18 incorporating a C17 fragment of a chamfered granite mullioned window; irregular ceiling joists, some of which are probably C18, one with a bowtell-moulded edge and of overall bowed shape, possibly a reused ships timber; some plank and muntin partitions and a dowelled pantry screen. Interior of front range not inspected but has contemporary staircase with lattice child-gate at base and modillion cornice in entrance hall. HISTORY: In 1283-5 Methleigh was sold to Serlo de Nansladron, then to Arundel family by marriage, extinct after John Arundel and sold to Coode family c1702.
