Office range at former brewery, incorporating remains of early C19 workhouse in rear wing. Dated 1882 over main entrance. Late C19 and mid C20 alterations. By William Bradford for the brewers Caparn & Hankey. Coursed and squared lias limestone and brick with granite, ashlar and terracotta dressings. Steep pitched slate roof with steeply gabled end turrets with iron crests, and 2 coped ridge stacks. French Renaissance Revival style. Chamfered plinth and string course, latticed first floor band, modillion cornice with panelled frieze and strapwork balustrade. 2 storeys plus attics; 7 window range. Projecting central bay with frieze inscribed "Castle Brewery" and pediment with low-relief depiction of Newark Castle. Above, a square clock tower with modillion cornice and pierced balustrade, topped with a fishscale-slated square dome crowned with a spire. The end bays are emphasised by giant rusticated terracotta pilasters. Paired round headed plain sashes, the central pair smaller and with shafts, all with multi keystone heads. The 2 pairs flanking the centre have small balconies. Central moulded round headed doorway with shafts, and date and monogram above, containing recessed revolving doors with curved sidelights and fanlight. On either side, 3 paired round-headed plain sashes. Right gable has a plain sash and to its right a doorway, both round headed. plainer brick rear elevation has a recessed centre with a glazed double door with side lights and fanlight, and above it a Venetian window. Above again, a pediment containing a Diocletian window with glazing bars. Altered rear wing, brick with stone dressings and slate roof, has cogged eaves to left, and dentillated eaves to right, and a ridge stack. 2 storeys; 16 bays arranged 2:8:6. Projecting single bay to left under pediment. To right, square oriel window and 13 segment headed metal casements, all C20. Below, three 3-light workshop windows with a pair of doors between the left pair. To their right, a single door. To their left, a sliding door and beyond, a 2-light casement. Interior has groined vaulted entrance hall with panelled walls and glazed round headed doors with fanlights. Corridors and principal rooms have moulded cornices and doorcases. Cantilevered dog leg stone stair with cast iron balustrade and ramped handrail. On the landing, a four-centred arched built-in display case. First floor corridor has moulded round headed oorways and Gothic winder stair to loft. (Buildings of England: N Pevsner, revised E Williamson: Nottinghamshire: London: 1979-: 196-197).
