Includes: Nos.426-428 ST JOHN STREET. Commercial building. Occupyies prominent corner site opposite The Angel; former bank, offices and shops, now with shops below, offices above. 1880-1881. F. and H. Francis, architects and Merritt and Ashby, builders for Mr. McSheehan, developer. Upper floors with yellow and gold stock bricks laid in Flemish bond with stone and stucco dressings; ground-floor entrances and shopfronts of various materials including red sandstone, granite, and polished marble; parapet obscures roof, end-wall brick stacks. Late-Italianate style. Four storeys; 15-window range, 1:4:1:4:1:4. Upper floor bays articulated by single-storey height stucco pilasters to each floor, floors indicated by stucco panelling (1st floor), bracketed (2nd floor) and richly moulded (3rd floor) sill bands; floor heights and 1/1 sashes decrease in height as they go up. 1st and 2nd floors with pedimented tripartite pilastered windows to alternate bays; other bays each with four 1/1 eared architraved sashes. 3rd floor with simplified tripartite windows flanked by banded stucco and small empty niches; intervening bays with 1/1 sashes flanked by stucco pilasters. Wide entablature with carved frieze and bracketed projecting cornice; stucco parapet with stone coping, and higher curved parapet to corner reading '1880 BANK BUILDINGS'. Ground-floors: no. 357 of same Gothic-style treatment as no. 353-355 Goswell Road (q.v.); no. 359 with late C19 shopfront with recessed doorway on left and shop windows to right, granite piers with coupled bracketed-consoles support fascia and dentilled cornice; nos. 361-363 with partially altered shopfront and office entrances articulated by polished granite piers; wood panelled doors and shop windows over marble panels; no. 428 St. John Street with C20 shopfront and original piers; no. 426 St. John Street with altered (C20) remnants of C19 shopfront.
