GV II

Terraced houses. Originally called York Place, of which the ten westernmost were built in 1806, the rest between 1808 and 1812. Possibly designed by James Taylor. Yellow brick set in Flemish bond, stucco, mansard roofs of Welsh and artificial slate. Four storeys over basement, two windows each. Basement and ground floor stuccoed as far as storey band, and generally scored as ashlar, except for nos 351-359 which have exposed brickwork. Round-arched entrances; nos 319-321 have late C20 replacement doorcases; nos 323-327 and 343 have doorcases with reeded pilasters with lion-head stops and cornice; no 329 has a panelled doorcase, probably replacement, and no 331 a reeded doorcase; nos 333-341 and 345-347 have fluted quarter-columns and cornice; nos 349-55 have reeded engaged Ionic columns and reeded cornice; no 357 has paired reeded pilasters with lion-head stops and cornice, no 359 has a late C20 entrance deeply recessed; fanlight with decorative glazing to nos 321, 323, 335-343, 357; panelled doors of original design to nos 321-323. Ground-floor windows round-arched with gauged brick heads, that to no 351 with window guard; later shallow single-storey bow window to no 357. Upper windows flat-arched with gauged brick heads, those to first floor of piano nobile proportions, except that nos 333 and 343 have raised sills. Bracketed balconies with iron railings to first-floor windows of nos 327, 345, other balconies probably replacement. Parapet. Dormers in mansard roofs to all houses. Area railings of geometrical design to nos 327-333 and 351. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
