HARLAXTON SK8832 CHURCH STREET 1315-0/14/138 (North West side) 24/09/79 No.4 Rose Cottage and adjoining well head GV II

Estate cottage, now a house, and adjoining well head. c1700, remodelled c1820-1840, with mid C20 additions and alterations. Rubble, rendered and whitewashed, with with first floor partly hung with fishscale tile. Ashlar dressings and pantile roof with coped brick ridge stack. 2 storeys; 6 window range. Windows are mainly C19 casements with leaded glazing, with wooden mullions to the first floor and stone mullions below. Facing gable has a stepped external brick gable stack, with ashlar dressings and 2 flues, one of them terracotta, crenellated. To its left, a 2-light window. Below, to its right, a 3-light window. Right return has to left a hipped stone stair turret with a small window, and an adjoining square ashlar external stack with stone banded square flue. Various C19 and C20 windows, including a C18 2-light ground floor window with ovolo mullions. Left return has to right a 2-light window on each floor, with various first floor windows to left. Central single storey flat roofed addition with a 5-light window and a door. Between them, a square ashlar well head with slab coping and a round projection to the front. Stone bracket above, with crane and pulley. This building is one of those remodelled in a picturesque style c 1820-1840 by Gregory Gregory, Lord of the Manor of Harlaxton, following the precepts of JC Loudon. Included for group value.
