House, now 2 dwellings, mid C18. Main block of red
Flemish-bond brickwork with red pointing, plain parapet and
clay plain tile roof. Block to SE of Roman cement-coated
brickwork with steep clay plain tile roof.
EXTERIOR: main block of 2 storeys and 5-window range of
double-hung sash windows with small panes, rubbed brick arches
and recessed aprons. Moulded brick cornice and complex raised
band at first-floor height. On the upper floor the centre
breaks forward slightly with moulded semicircular brick
decoration below sill. Central pedimented doorcase with fluted
Ionic pilasters, a modillioned cornice and geometrical
interlaced frieze panel. Framing to recess and panelled door
opening has foliate ornament. Door has 8 raised-and-fielded
panels, the top 2 with original glazing. On rear outside wall
is reused shell hood with enclosed grotesque mask.
Block to SE has ridgeline stack at NW gable end. 2 storeys and
attics with one dormer in front roof slope. Painted timber
modillioned cornice and large, central canted oriel with
double-hung sash windows with small panes. Painted timber
fascia band at first-floor level. Ground floor has central C19
door with 2 semicircular-headed panels and this now forms
access to yard behind. C20 rear extensions.
INTERIOR: in the hallway of main building is a semicircular
arch on panelled pilasters and eared door architrave. Well
staircase with turned balusters, console tread ends and Tuscan
column newels. A number of contemporary doors survive.
Southernmost ground-floor room has modillioned timber cornice,
plain panelled dado and heavily moulded dado rail and
skirtings. Windows have panelled reveals. End wall has
exceptional mid C18 fireplace, substantially composed markedly
enriched mouldings on a timber carcase. Fireplace opening has
architrave of 2 bands of such mouldings and provides a
double-eared profile. Either side are long foliate consoles
each with a moulded plinth. Mantel shelf in form of an
enriched cornice is supported on 2 frontal consoles with the
enclosed panel of fret ornament similar to front doorcase.
Above is a further moulded panel with eared profile, foliate
carving and lateral consoles. Doorway to this fine and very
complete room has contemporary door of 6 raised-and-fielded
panels and architraves.
