GV II

Two houses, now hotel. 1818-26. Brick with stucco front; hipped slate roof with brick internal stacks. Double-depth plan. Regency style influenced by Leamington Spa. 3 storeys; 6-window range; ends break back. Wide eaves on paired brackets. End entrances recessed behind distyle-in-antis porches with fluted Doric columns, architraves and overlights with decorative glazing bars to 6-fielded-panel doors. Windows have sills, those to ground floor are round-headed with sashes with glazing bars, those to 1st floor with 12-pane sashes, those to 2nd floor with 6-pane sashes. Returns with top modillioned brick cornices; right return entrance has doorcase with pilasters, frieze and canopy to flush-panel door; altered rear. Part of the early C19 development of northern Stratford, known as New Town; Payton Street named after John Payton, landlord of the White Lion Inn, who sold the land in 1817.
