Formerly known as: Guildhall (part) CHURCH STREET. School house, master's house from c1553, now offices. For the Guild of The Holy Cross. 1427-8, with later alterations; restored 1892-5. Timber-frame with plaster and some brick infill on ashlar plinth; tile roof with brick end stack. 4-unit plan. 2 storeys; central gabled stair wing. Wing has brick ground floor, on brick and rubble plinth, incorporating blocked elliptical-headed opening to left with moulded corner post and 2 blocked openings to left return. Entrance to left of wing. 2 ground-floor windows with 4-light leaded casements to right of wing, probably blocked window to left. 1st floor has 3-light window to left of wing, with 2-light window over entrance to right and blocked 3-light window to left, wing has 3-light window, all with leaded glazing. Close-studded framing with middle rail. Right return has ovolo-mullioned windows to each floor. Rear has late C20 range attached. INTERIOR: 1st floor open to roof, 3 tie beam and collar trusses, one with arch braces and one with infill; large fireplace to left end. One of the earliest timber-framed school buildings in the country, for which the building accounts remain.
