Details
STANNINGTON BLAGDON NZ 27 NW 8/86 South Lodges, gate screen 27.8.52 and gates II* GV Gate Lodges, screen and gates. 1786-1787 by James Wyatt. Tooled ashlar; Lakeland slate roofs; cast iron. Pair of octagonal lodges with plinth, freize, moulded cornice and tall blocking course with carved festoons; central domed recess and 12-pane sash windows in adjacent faces. Pyramidal roof with central octagonal stepped-and-corniced stack. Lodges linked to gatepiers by 3-bay Roman Doric screen closed by railings with spike finials. Broad piers with domed recesses carry carved bulls, painted white. Double gates with downswept tops, upcurved rail and lower rail of linked circles, and spike finials.
Each lodge has flush-panelled door on internal face; C20 3-bay cottage in similar style attached to east lodge.
