Probable former inn, now hotel and offices. Mid/late-C17 refronted in late C18 and with later alterations. Limestone ashlar to front; coursed squared limestone rubble and render to rear. Roof covering not visible at front; concrete tile to rear range. Ashlar and brick left-end stack; external rear axial stack on front range now blocked off. Building consists of 4 substantial ranges around a courtyard entered by a carriage-entrance through front range. Front range has single bay recessed to centre right. To front, 2-storey 6-window range. First floor has six 6/6-pane sashes in plain reveals with stone cills; 4 similar windows to ground floor. Round-headed former doorway to far right has fanlight and piece of reused late C18 glazing forming fixed light window (No.12). Pair of large doors each of 9 panels with 4-centred arched heads in carriage entrance to centre; 6-panel door in round-headed opening with fanlight to left (No.14). Ashlar plinth; band course over the first floor; moulded stone cornice and coped parapet. Down pipes to the left and right sides are lead, except bottom length of each, with moulded lead hoppers. INTERIOR has 2 similar staircases (also cf No.51 Coxwell Street); main staircase (now No.14) from ground to first floor is early/mid C18 well staircase with 3 turned balusters to a tread; shaped tread ends; long curtail step; ridged and cornice handrail and responding dado panelling ramped up to half and first floor landings. Secondary staircase (now No.12) is similar well staircase with 2 turned balusters to a tread; responding dado panelling ramped up at winders at corners; considerable C19/C20 reconstruction from first to second floors. No.12 has small C19 closed-string stick-baluster staircase to rear; No.14 has C20 back staircase. Ground floor front left (No.14) is early/mid C18 panelled room (cf No.51 Coxwell Street) with raised and fielded panels above and below moulded dado rail, modillion cornice, reeded pilasters with moulded cornices and individual sections of pulvinated frieze visually support boxed-out beams with panelled soffits. Late C18 joinery within splayed window reveals dates from refronting. Late C19/early C20 fireplace. Interiors of rooms in No.12 not inspected; No.14 has C19 stone fireplaces in first floor rooms, heavily enriched late C19 fireplace in ground floor rear. No.14 has plastered beams with broad chamfers and ogee stops over stairs and in first and ground floor corridors. Broader chamfers and simpler stops to ground floor rear.
