Office. 1904. By Edward Gabriel. Grey granite ashlar ground floor and limestone ashlar above, lateral stacks, slate mansard roof and copper-clad dome. Double-depth plan. Edwardian Baroque style. 3 storeys, 2 attics and basement; 3-window range. The ground floor has raised bands, a rock-faced plinth and long quoins with raised rounded panels, to a moulded band; tetrastyle Ionic columns to upper floors, entablature set forward at the ends and over the middle pair of columns with a modillion cornice with central open segmental pediment; the attic storey is set back to each side with a moulded coping, to a central section with clasping panelled pilasters, beneath an octagonal drum with a moulded coping and copper dome. Ground-floor arcade of 3 semicircular arches with moulded imposts, right-hand doorway with double 8-panel doors and plate-glass overlight, and plate-glass C20 windows. Upper floors have flush mullions and transoms, to a 2 storey, 3-light central bow with flanking cross windows and panels between storeys with swag, drapery and branches. The Mannerist style pediment has similar carving to a shield in the tympanum, with volutes above, balustrades each side, and 2 reclining figures on top. The attic has an open central arch with raised voussoirs and eared, keyed architrave, the drum has semicircular-arched windows with imposts and keys, the roof has semicircular-arched dormers with scrolled feet, and a finial and weather vane. Rear elevation C18, with segmental-headed windows and 6/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR not inspected. (Gomme A, Jenner M and Little B: Bristol, An Architectural History: Bristol: 1979-: 407).
