Pair of attached houses, now single college. Mid C18, converted late C20. Stucco with rubble gable and central party wall stacks and a pantile roof. Double-depth plan. Early Georgian style. Each of 2 storeys, attic and basement; left-hand 2-window and right-hand 4-window range. Linked by a timber modillion eaves cornice. No.39 has a central doorway with a moulded frame, bracketed canopy and wide rectangular overlight with glazing bars and 6-panel door; No.41 has early C19 semicircular-arched doorway with bracketed pediment, a batswing fanlight and 6-panel door. No.39 has 8/8-pane sashes, 6/6-panes to the left of the doorway; No.41 has cambered heads to narrow 6/6-pane sashes, slightly wider to the 3 ground-floor sashes. 6 hipped dormers with terracotta finials. INTERIOR: extensively remodelled and interconnected; rear lateral dogleg stair with uncut string, turned balusters, panelled square newels and a ramped rail; shutters and fireplaces. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front area wrought-iron railings and gates with urn finials. Now interconnected. (Gomme A: Street Index of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest: 59).
