TL 6222 GREAT DUNMOW WHITE STREET 7/101 Maltings at Boyes Croft 2.6.71 II*

Maltings complex. Early C16 and later, timber framed and plastered and part weatherboarding and brick. Long C16 range with gabled peg tile roof, substantially rendered but with weatheboarding in upper half and old battened or diamond mullioned window openings. To the E, a conical peg tile roofed drying kiln with rendered top and timber weather cover on iron stays. To the north of this a red brick and slate roofed C19 extension lean-to. Beyond this a barn like taller block with half hipped peg tile roof and lean-to roof over open gallery and ladder stairs, with some old pargetting. To the W end, a 2 storey small square block, with weatherboarded first floor over red brick, gabled peg tile roof and loft access door. To the W again, a further drying kiln of square plan form and peg tiles with later outbuilding, now converted to day centre. Interior of early C16 range shows 8 crown posts, bracing and long jowls on storey posts. First floor is on binders with hanging knees and flat section floor joists have soffit tennons with diminished haunches.
