Details
ST BRIAVELS B4228, HART HILL SO 50 SE (west side) 6/130 Ghyll House Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Dated 1913 MAL (Lamb) on stone set in under window on south side. Coursed and snecked rock-faced sandstone with drafted margins at quoins, Welsh slate and copper roof. An octagonal building with recessed verandah entry between projecting 2 storey square bays with haunched pediments to north and east and a porch projection at back. Two storeys with basement, deep eaves stacks at internal angles. Square bays with stone mullions are 1:3:1-light with leading, and others are wood casements with bars, but a large stair window is in 3 x 3 lights with leading. Entrance a pair of panelled doors with original glazing under a transom light with leading, and verandah front is 3-arched with a timber-framed bay above. Interior is still apparently in state as built, with especially fine joinery in panelled doors and an octagonal well stair to square newels with acorn finials and turned balusters opening directly from a central octagonal hall with skylight; two good carved wood fireplaces are in a provincial design, one with fluted pilasters and one with 2 lion supporters to arms with motto 'Via Veritas Vita'. This is an unusually complete example of the work of the immediate pre-war period, beautifully executed, especially in interior fittings, and an unusual form for a farmhouse. During the First World War it is said to have been in use as a hospital.
