SO 71 SW WESTBURY-ON-SEVERN BOLLOW
11/194 Barn, Bays Court
GV II
Barn; early C19; thin, squared, coursed grey stone to barn, slate
roof; nearer random rubble to left extension, tiled roof. 4-bay
barn with 3-bay extension. Barn, wide opening to threshing floor
with cambered brick-on-end arch over. Slit air vent on left in
barn. To right a boarded door, with shuttered window beyond,
under a single cambered arch with red stone voussoirs, appears to
have opened into barn. Beyond a square, shuttered window at
ground-floor, no lintel, with boarded door beyond with cambered
brick arch over. Flight of stone steps rises to boarded door at
right-hand end, with cambered brick arch over. To left a slightly
lower 2-storey wing; opening against barn with timber lintel over,
followed by boarded door with cambered brick arch, and slit air-
vents either side. On left return stone steps up to boarded gable
door with flat timber lintel: either side nearly square window
with cambered brick arches, both boarded up. Above, in gable, 4
ledges with openings for dovecote.
Internally stone-paved threshing floor: gabled porch on rear.
Left open, right-hand half now all lofted, originally probably
only end part. Lower section was used as cider house, upper
probably granary. Bays in roof irregular, tie beam trusses with
angle struts; some bolted collar trusses at half bays. Extension
king-post trusses, with narrow bays: one boarded off as dovecote.
Forms group with house and stable, (q.v.).
