10/65 Court House, walls and gatehouse

II*

Walls and gatehouse to Littledean Court House, formerly Gaol: 1788-'91, by W. Blackburn. Squared, coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Enclose a large square, with splayed corners, gatehouse in centre of south face. Wall has two offsets and a nearly-flush coping: in centre of wall face either side of gatehouse externally is a large, plain ashlar stone. Internally lower part of walls ashlar, no offsets. Gatehouse projects from wall: projecting central part contains gateway, with lower, slightly recessed wings each side. Gateway has 2-centred arch, projecting roll-moulding all round, with above, on each side, a blank shield. Projecting plain ashlar band matches frieze to wings. Doors double, with 9 flush panels each, head of archway filled iron grille. Outside a footscraper and 2 stone bollards. Wings on each side have heavily-battered ashlar bases rising to just above springing of gateway. Above each 2 square-headed single-light windows, with iron bars. Internally wooden casing for clock over entrance. Rooms each side, western originally porter's lodge, eastern reception unit for prisoners.
