8/70 Church of St. Peter, and 2 pairs of gate piers with gate
I
Church. 1866 by John Middleton of Cheltenham. Squared and snecked rubble sandstone with white Bath stone dressings, tiled roof, coped gables with elaborate cross finials. South west tower, 4-bay nave with clerestory, single storey north and south aisles, gabled south porch with elaborate bargeboard, 2-bay chancel. Tower of 3 stages with string courses, stepped angle buttresses on lower 2 stages, large pointed window at belfry stage with colonnette shafts and carved head label stops. Stone broach spire above. Aisle windows all 3-light but with varying tracery in French Gothic style. 4 clerestory roundels with alternating tracery designs. Interior: Nave has arched timber roof with large pierced trefoils above and arched windbracing across rafters. The main trusses are supported on colonnettes with carved capitals on richly ornamental corbels. The roofs are all painted and stencilled. Arcade of 4 pointed arches on cylindrical piers with richly carved capitals, all in striped Bath stone/blue Forest stone with red sandstone upper moulding. Chancel arch also incorporates red sandstone in striped work, and above are Alpha and Omega designs and a foliated cross. In the Chancel, reredos by Hardman in several different marbles, carved and gilded, with flanking sedilia and piscina to match. Encaustic tiles on Chancel floor. Original pews remain nearly all with double brass candlesticks with foliage design. Elaborate font and pulpit of marble and Forest stone. Chancel windows by Hardman. Church appears to have had very little alteration. Gate piers of stone in form of coped cross gables with elaborate fleur-de-lis finials and wrought iron gate between with ecclesiastical symbols - one pair leading to south porch, other pair opposite west door at about 50m distant.
