Details
WALLSEND TYNEMOUTH ROAD (south side) NZ 36 NW Howdon 7/171 Bewicke Schools G.V. II Schools. 1878 by J. Johnstone for Wallsend School Board. Snecked sandstone with ashlar plinth, dressings and quoins; Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. Symmetrical; E-plan. One storey, 15 bays. Gable over central bay in 5-bay central section flanked by gabled projecting bays; pent porch between these gables; 4-bay flat sections set back at each end. Diagonal-boarded central door and overlight; similar doors in end bays of porch with 4 pink sandstone Gothic columns on dwarf walls. 2-light windows flanking central door and in 4-bay sections and 3-light windows in gabled projections have stone mullions and transoms, and glazing bars; relieving arches in gables. Carved panels in gables inscribed BOYS SCHOOL, INFANT SCHOOL, GIRLS SCHOOL. Steeply-pitched roofs have roll-moulded apex to gable copings on moulded kneelers; ridge chimneys with plinth and coping; 2 small gabled ventilators. Empty at time of survey.
