SHELF BRIGHOUSE AND DENHOLME SE 12 NW GATE ROAD (west side) 1/26 Hargreaves Head
G. V. II
House, bearing dated door lintel inscribed 'SBM1693' but rebuilt in the main c.1740 with mid C19 alterations. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 7 bay facade. Bays 2 to 4 break forward in a symmetrical arrangement under a gable with rusticated quoins, band, cornice and pediment. Central doorway with architrave and pulvinated frieze has sash window over with architrave. To either side are slender sash windows with projecting sides with same over. 1st bay has large 2-light C19 sash window with same over and coped gable. 3rd bay has C17 door lintel with altered jambs (now window), wide string course over ground floor windows and 2-light sash window with same over. 4th bay has single storey gabled extension early C20 (contemporary with internal staircase) with 2-light sash window and single sash to 1st floor of main range, coped gable with stack. 2 other stacks to ridge at junctions of 1st and 2nd bays, and 2nd and 3rd bays. Left hand gable has traces of mullioned window to 1st floor. Rear kitchen wing has 4-light mullioned window with added lights over. Later C19 2-storey wing built on to rear of 1st bay.
Interior: Main rooms to front have good panelling. 1st bay has bolection moulded panels, 2nd bay has raised and fielded panels with finely moulded fireplace with pulvinated lintel. 1st floor room to 2nd bay also panelled.
