CHESTERTON AND KINGSTON SP35NW 4/48 Chesterton Windmill 07/01/52 I

Windmill. 1632. Probably designed by Sir Edward Peyto for himself. Restored 1965-1974. Ground floor of limestone ashlar; first floor of sandstone ashlar; moulded limestone string course and cornice. Ribbed aluminium cap with finial. Circular plan. 2 storeys. Tall ground floor has open arcade of 6 moulded sandstone round arches, and piers with moulded bases and capitals. First floor has 2 ovolo-moulded stone cross windows to front, and 2 similar small single lights to rear. Renewed cloth spread sails. To rear: segmental-roof roof dormer has 3-light window and date with initials EP. Interior: said to retain its machinery. The cap could be turned into the wind by a hand winch. There was originally a central timber structure housing the staircase. The windmill stands on a shallow raised platform. It was associated with Chesterton House, demolished in 1802. (V.C.H.: Warwickshire, Vol.5, p.42; Buildings of England: Warwickshire, p.230).
