1/58 Sycamore Cottage

GV II

House. Mid C16 timber-frame encased in stone c1690 with early C19 and mid C20 alterations. Large coursed rubble, stone slate roof. End-lobby entry plan. 2 cells with added cell c1690 to south-east (right end). 2 storeys. Quoins. Three 1st-floor windows. Double course of large stone footings show extent of original house with smaller stones above and to added cell to right. Doorway with monolithic lintel to left of 3 bays of windows with projecting double slate sills; those to ground floor have deep monolithic lintels, those above are set under former eaves. Exposed wall-plate. To left of doorway outshut, coursed in, has lean-to roof against the left-hand return wall. Gable brick stacks of c1690. Rear has similar disposition of windows as front with doorway with monolithic lintel in outshut to right.

Interior: doorway opens against brick basket-arched fireplace c1690, brick division wall has girding beam above, square-cut joists and stop-chamfered spine beam. Posts on padstones, one partly sunk in front wall. 2nd cell has C16 beamed ceiling with large laid-on joists (a rare and unusual feature).
