Details
CLAPHAM-CUM-NEWBY NEWBY SD 7496 SD 76 NW 13/13 + 7/13 Croft House - II House. C17 with C18 alterations. Squared rubble, stone dressings, stone slate roof. Gable end to street. Garden entrance front: 2 storeys, 3 bays with additional left-hand bay indicated by a butt-joint. Entrance right of centre has chamfered surround and C17 decorated lintel with a star-like stop at the top of each jamb; 6 panel door, upper 2 glazed. To left is ground floor former 4-light double chamfered mullioned window with only central mullion remaining; C20 casements. To right is 2-light double chamfered mullioned window, which was probably 3-light originally, with a repositioned central cavetto mullion; left-hand light is fixed, right hand has sashes with glazing bars. On extreme right is blocked ground floor fire window. On upper floor to left is late C17/early C18 3-light chamfered window, and to the right of centre is a C18 3-light flat faced mullioned window; both have central 8-pane sashes and outer C20 casements. On the right is a late C19/early C20 upper floor window with sashes and glazing bars. Quoins; gable end stack to right and at former left-hand gable, now at junction with C18 extension which is reputed to be a former peat house, now having chamfered ground floor window and C20 upper floor window with concrete lintel. Interior: fireplace has moulded surround and corbels. Flat arched lintel with imitation keystone and incised rose motif.
