9/6 Wall around courtyard on garden side of service 28.7.86 range of Rhinefield House Hotel
GV II
Retaining wall with balustrade around sunken courtyard, 1888-90 by WH Romaine-Walker and Tanner. Purbeck and Bath stone. Wall starts at corner of main house as retaining wall to higher terrace in front of it and runs away from it for 20m then parallel to service range, but it then ramps down to run along edge of lower terrace in front of service range, as a balustrade wall only. Retaining wall of Purbeck stone. Balustrade of square rusticated piers linked by keyed arches, on top heavy moulded handrail. There is a flight of 9 steps down from terrace in front of house, with similar balusters, but ball finials at top and bottom.
