SU 1414 FORDINGBRIDGE BRIDGE STREET
15/14 Road bridge over 30.9.64 River Avon (Formerly listed as ridge GV over River Avon) II* Road bridge. C14 or C15, widened c1841, refaced 1901, cantilevered footway added to one side c1960. Ironstone, widened and refaced in Chilmark stone. 7 arch bridge with rising approaches at each end. Bridge consists of inner chamfered medieval arches, outside them, on each side large spurs added to support outer C19 chamfered depressed pointed arches. Above raised string at road level and parapet with weathered coping. Each end of bridge parapet is octagonal pier with heavy cap and corbel below on outside. Approaches have stone retaining walls with similar parapet butting pier. On N side is late C20 walkway on concrete cantilevers built into C19 widening.
