ASKRIGG MARKET PLACE SD 99 SW (west side) 19/24 Church of Saint Oswald 25.3.69 GV I Church. C15 with some earlier work and C19 alterations. Rubble, lead roofs. West tower, 5-bay nave and chancel in 1 with aisles, south porch. Quoins. Tower: 3 storeys. West face: ground-floor 2-light cinquefoiled window with Perpendicular tracery in straight-sided pointed arch with hoodmould; first-floor, single-light trefoiled window. 2-light belfry openings with trefoil heads and hoodmoulds; crenellated parapet and corner pinnacles. Porch: continuous hollow-moulded pointed archway. Stone benches. South doorway: continuous hollow-moulded pointed arch with animals on label stops. C19 Perpendicular-style priest's door. C19 2-light Perpendicular-style windows. Parapet. Clerestorey: windows of 3 pointed- arch lights; crenellated parapets. East window: Perpendicular-style, 5 lights with transom, of 1854 (Pevsner). Interior: stop-chamfered tower arch, and vault in tower of 4 pointed ribs with run-out chamfers. North arcade: Early English circular piers and capitals, double-chamfered depressed pointed arches. South arcade: Perpendicular piers and double- chamfered arches. Roofs: Perpendicular, with finely-moulded beams to nave and chancel. Concave-sided octagonal font on circular base. C19 font near priest's door. Hollow octagonal stone at west end. C19 panelled pews with doors. Coat of arms of George III over tower arch. Many fine C18 and early C19 wall monuments. C18 clock face over south door. VCH i, p 211.
