Parish church. C12 with C13 and C14 additions and alterations, early C19
and early C20 restorations. Coursed sandstone rubble, ashlar dressings
with tiled roof, timber-framed upper stage to tower. Nave, north tower
and north porch, north-east aisle (now forming organ chamber), south porch;
chancel with north chapel.
South front, nave: raised verges, restored 3-
light window with trefoil headed lights and tracery to left, similar window
and 2-light C13 window to right of C19 gabled porch with coat of arms in
gable; inner C12 doorway with semi-circular-headed relieving arch with
label and chevron and dog-tooth ornament, plain masonry tympanum and
decorated lintel below with diapering and scale ornament, plain jambs with
chamfered brackets supporting lintel; chancel with buttress at junction with
nave and further buttress to east end, altered ogee-headed light to left
and window with two trefoil-headed lights to right of doorway with chamfered
jambs and 2-centred head; north tower, four stages with square pyramidal
spire, semicircular-headed lights to lower stages, pair of similar lights to
third stage, timber-framed bell stage with close-studding and bracing to
upper part, clock faces to north and south, hipped lucarnes to north and
south of spire.
INTERIOR: trussed rafter roof throughout, possibly of C14
to nave, north aisle and north chapel, C15 or C16 roof to chancel. Five-bay
nave with tower to north of central bay, two-bay arcade to north aisle of
two chamfered orders, central drum piers, semi-circular respond to east and
square to west with moulded capitals; chancel arch, squat semi-circular-headed
archway with moulded label, square responds with moulded imposts. Two-bay
chancel with north archway to chapel, semi-circular-headed arch of two orders,
both chamfered, inner semi-circular respond with scallop capital to east,
plain to west respond. Fittings: C15 stone reredos to east wall of north
chapel is of seven bays with central and outer bays of wider proportions
and carried to full height each with baldacchino canopy. C13 font, plain
circular bowl with cylindrical stem and chamfered base; wooden hexagonal
pulpit retaining C17 decorated panels.
