6/18 North Charford Manor House 30.9.64 II*

Large house. The building is a mixture of several phases; an east-west structure of C16 has a north wing of the C17, westward extension of the C18 (providing the main front), and an eastward large replacement extension of 1891 (following a fire), itself altered in the early C20. Brick walls of English bond, plinth, cambered arches and relieving arches, diaper patterns in a south end stack, stone banding and admixture in a north end massive stack; main (west) elevation of stucco. Tile roof. Symmetrical front with tall centre of three storeys and attic, and wings of one storey: the gable has a semi-circular section above a parapet and encloses a circular window, from the side walls of the middle section a parapet drops at each side by a curve to meet the wing parapets, there is a Venetian window above a 1st floor three-light sash, and three-light sashes to each wing: a classical porch of four bays has been filled with glazing. The half-spandrels at 1st floor level are marked by large circular patterns, with fluted segments. The main two-storeyed building behind the unusual facade is of vernacular form, with irregular features. The east wing (late C19) is two storeys and attic, of William and Mary style. Interior: there are three closely-spaced doorways between the old block and the north wing, two having Tudor form: the north wing has the remains of a timber frame, within the (later) walls.
