GV II
Large manor house. Mid C16; additions of early-mid C17, c1700
and c1896. Random rubble limestone, mostly roughcast rendered;
ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic; L-
plan with east cross wing. North front: earliest part is centre
of north front, two sets of diagonal ridge-mounted chimney shafts
indicating the original ends. Parapets to elevation with central
parapet gabled 2-storey porch having tall ashlar pilaster corner
buttresses topped by ball finials. Moulded round arched doorway
beneath entablature with flanking Tuscan pilasters; imposts and
keystone. Cornice above entablature rises over armorial shield.
Three-light cavetto mullioned casement above with hoodmould
continuous between buttresses. Ground floor cross-window to left
of porch, 6-light wide mullioned and transomed casement to right.
Upper floor 2 + 2-light to left, 3 + 3-light to right, all with
hoodmoulds. Projecting gable end of east cross wing to left
having gable-mounted chimney, and single 3-light recessed cavetto
mullioned casement to upper floor and attic. Flush gable to right
is also part of C17 enlargement with single-window fenestration
below. East front: c1700 front to north wing has 3 gables, 3-
window fenestration ; 4-light to ground floor and 3-light to upper
floor, all under continuous hoodmoulds; 2-light with separate
hoodmould in each gable. Central ridge-mounted chimney with 4
linked shafts and moulded cap. North end of wing partially
obscured by late C19 2-storey service addition with mullioned and
transomed fenestration. East elevation to east cross wing has 4
gables. Scattered and mixed fenestration, much restored. South
side: a confusing mixture of gables and additions. Tall narrow
blank-gabled projection to rear of earliest part was probably the
stair turret, ceasing in that function during C18 alterations.
Larger gable with indications of altered openings is part of C17
enlargement; rendered projection at south west corner being part
of late C19 alterations. Interior: altered in C18 and late C19.
Ice house (q.v.) and dovecote (q.v.) to north.
