BYWELL BYWELL NZ 0461 23/61 Cross slab 1 metre east of south aisle of Church of St. Peter

GV II

Sepulchral slab, late C11 or C12. Sandstone. Tapering slab with relief design within raised border, head broken away. Expanded-arm cross rising from triangular base, shears to right and stylised angular knotwork to left. Above cross the lower part of animal perhaps a rampant lion, possibly the lion of de Insula, (cf. slab at church of St. Andrew). Unusual combination of Pre-Conquest stylistic influence with medieval heraldry.
