Details
CHULMLEIGH NEW STREET (east side), SS 6814 - 6914 Chulmleigh 7/84 The Cottage GV II Cottage. C18, extended possibly in early C19, with C20 alterations. Rendered, stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof, half-hipped at front end. Axial brick stack and brick stack at rear gable end. Plan. The house is built at right angles to the street and consists of a 2 room plan with large room to rear heated by gable end stack with winder staircase to front left- hand corner (replaced in C20) and opposing entrance doorways to each side, and a front room heated by the axial stack with direct front entry; the front room has been extended slightly to the right of the rear room by the addition of a shallow wing with a staircase in the rear right-hand corner, creating an overall L-shaped plan. Solid cob walls between the front and rear rooms and formerly between the front room and the shallow projecting right-hand wing suggests the building has developed in 3 phases, the rear room containing the earlier fabric, the front room belongs to the second phase, and the addition of the right-hand wing comprising the final phase. C20 internal alterations have obscured accurate dating features for the 3 phases, but the range would appear to be between the early C18 and mid C19. Exterior: 2 storeys. C20 fenestration throughout with diamond leaded lights. Single window at front end above window to each side of reused late C19 plank door. Interior: rear room has single chamfered cross ceiling beam with run out stops. Handmade late C18 or early C19 brick jambs to fireplace. Front room has large blocked window opening on left side. C19 roof structure with pegged trusses with straight principals and waney rafters.
