Details
CHULMELIGH EAST STREET, (south side), SS 6814 -6914 Chulmleigh 7/65 Culverhill House GV II House. Late C17 or early C18. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Bitumenized slate roof with gable ends. Axial brick stack. Plan: 2 room plan, each room heated by axial stack, the right-hand room divided axially to create a front connecting passage between the front entrance and left-hand room. Staircase close to front left-hand corner of left-hand room with blocked entrances to front and rear at the end. The space behind the stairs was originally partitioned off from the left-hand room to create a small dairy. In C20 the house was extended into the single storey outbuilding attached at right end. Exterior: 2 storeys with attic storey. 3 window range. C19 fenestration largely intact all 3 light casements except for 2 light window at left end above blocked doorway. 4 panelled door with overlight and rusticated surround at right end. Interior. C19 joinery principally intact. C19 winder staircase. Early C19 semi- circular headed doorway at head of stairs. Fireplace to left-hand room altered in C20. Roof not accessible but partly visible in attic storey and appears to be largely intact with straight principals.
