WINTERBORNE STICKLAND ST 8304 WEST STREET (North side)
11/126 Church of St Mary 14-7-55 GV I Parish church, nave and chancel cl3, west tower c.1500, south porch C16, remodelling and north tomb chamber probably 1716 and later in the C18. Restoration of 1892. Flint, banded flint and rubble, squared rubble and flint chequerwork and render with ashlar dressings. Nave slated, chancel is tiled with stone-slate margins, stone copings. Nave has ashlar parapet. Plan: nave, chancel, west tower, south porch and north tomb chamber. West tower: 2 stages with embattled parapet, diagonal buttresses and pinnacles with crocketted finials; blocked pointed doorway south; 3-light square headed - west window of 5-lights with square loop above; 2-light belfry windows with pointed heads and perpendicular tracery except to the west which has a plain square headed 2-light window. The nave. has C18 round headed windows with stone architraves bearing impost blocks and keystones. Tomb chamber has a similar window with an elliptical head and a reset 4-centred head doorway. Chancel east window is of 3 graduated lancets. The south chancel wall has a 2-light, square headed window right and a similar 3-light window left. Between is a (-centred, moulded doorway, with stopped labels. Porch has a pointed arch of 2 chamfered orders and bears a sundial. Within is a reset C15 sculpture of the crucifixion. The south doorway has a chamfered pointed head and contains a plank door on strap hinges.
Internal features: pointed chancel arch of 2 chamfered orders, the innermost dying into the responds; moulded tower arch with flat soffits; plastered nave and chancel ribbed waggon roofs, possibly medieval, with foliate bosses; C18 font on square pedestal with moulded cap and gadrooned base; C18 panelling especially in tomb chamber; C18 hexagonal pulpit with 2 heights of fielded panelling and steps with turned balusters; screen between chancel and tomb- chamber possibly muses parts of C15 rood screen; various C17, C18 and c19 monuments including large table tomb with scrolled end in tomb chamber to Thomas and Barbara Skinner; other fittings mainly C19.
