TM 19 NE BRACON ASH

5/13 Bracon Lodge 2/10/51 - II

Former farmhouse. C18, re-faced and refurbished in c.1800. Brick with gault brick facade and pantiled roofs. Continuous outshut to rear with catslide roof. 3 storeys and 5 bays of sash windows (smaller at top floor) with glazing bars beneath skewback arches. Slightly advanced pedimented centre bay with a Roman Doric porch - segmental in plan with 4 columns (2 engaged) and a frieze with triglyphs. 2-leaf panelled door flanked by narrow windows and a fine traceried fanlight above. Bracketted cornice and 2 massive stacks to rear of main block. Later gault brick 2-storeyed canted bay to south side. Fine sweeping staircase and landing in entrance hall with thin square-sectioned balusters and mahogany handrail. Service stair with attenuated vase shaped turned balusters. Doors with raised and fielded panels; some architraves with angle paterae.
