WITHERIDGE THE SQUARE (north side), SS 81 SW Witheridge 9/71 The Mitre Hotel (previously listed 20.2.67 as Mitre House) GV II Inn. Early C19. Coursed and squared rubble, wide bracketted eaves, gabled slate roof, small late C19 brick stacks. Plan and development: central hall with staircase, opening to each side into a reception room, 1 now a bar, 2 smaller service rooms opening off the rear of this hall. Carriageway to right with room above. Exterior: 2 storeys, 3:1 window, mullioned and transomed 2-light casements, close- set glazing bars. Handsome doorway to the centre of the left 3 bays, panelled door with a fanlight, panelled ingo, doorcase in wood with pilasters, entablature, and a cornice. Segmental-headed carriage opening to right of ground floor, C20 slatted wooden gates. Interior: entrance hall with a fine C19 staircase with turned newels and a moulded handrail.
