MARY TAVY HORNDON SX 58 SW 1/74 Horndon House - II

House, possibly originally longhouse. Mid C16, possibly incorporating earlier building, upper end raised and improved early C19, inner room fireplace and roof of mid C19 and later rebuilding of shippon wall (still in use as shippon late C19), C20 alterations. Mixed granite and slatestone rubble, slate roofs, cement-washed over lower range, with weathered gable stacks. 3 room and through passage plan, with unusually wide passage, lower end appears to have been originally unheated. Hall heated by stack backing on to passage, gable end stack to inner room. In the C19 a long single-storey outbuilding was added to the rear of the lower end with later outshuts at the rear. Upper end has 2 windows, at ground floor a 2-light casement of 2 panes each light and 2-light casement with segmental head, 3 panes each light; first floor has similar casement to left and 4-pane sash to right; footings rising to right. Lower end to left of 1½ storeys has single storey C20 porch in angle to right with C20 stable door, two 2-light casements to left, one with segmental head; lean-to to left, probably contemporary with C19 rebuilding of shippon, has small single light. Right return has large external stack to inner room. Left return has 2 C20 windows in lean-to and door, C20 2-light-casement in rendered gable end above. Rear has single storey lean-to to right with corrugated roof and 2 small C20 2-light casements, rear of through passage set back to left with C20 outer door, inside has step up to door opening with timber lintel. Rear of main range has at ground floor right a small chamfered granite ventilator window, 2-light casement of 6 panes each light with timber lintel and dripstone, and C20 French window, first floor right a 2-light casement with 3 panes each light. Interior passage has granite bacon-curing trough to right and rounded projection from rear of oven, large mortices above, previously floored, now open to roof level, possible site of door to left, keeping hole in rear wall. Heated room to right has fireplace with hollow-chamfered granite jambs, hatch above fireplace, to left of fireplace, remains of granite winder stair under C19 straight stair with 2-panelled door, door to passage has cambered chamfered lintel remaining from formerly wider opening, 4-panelled door with raised mouldings and part of hearth stone from first floor room projecting above lintel; larger window has deep splayed reveal, formerly with seat, also splayed reveal to granite window; ceiling has 2 chamfered cross beams, with run-out stops, hatch above fireplace, joists with step and run-out stops. Inner room at higher level, C20 fireplace inserted. From passage, 2 steps down to room to left, position of drain not visible. At first floor, formerly fireplace over hall stack. Rear of house possibly originally front.
